Diary of a CT Disciple in the Early 70’s: Talks and lecture at Major Universities. By Richard Navroth

In the early 70’s, and especially after 1972 when I had graduated from UCONN and moved into “The Boy’s House” next to the Norwalk CT Sri Chinmoy Centre, many of us used to go around to the various Universities to give talks and to reserve halls and schedule lectures for Guru. It wasn’t easy, we goofed up sometimes like keystone cops but we threw ourselves out into the effervescence of the manifestation. The following are a couple of entries from my diary beginning with Nov.10 1973  I believe.
Three disciple lectures were scheduled. Devashish and others; late to come, were supposed to meet Harit and I on the turnpike exit 15. We got lost, arrive late, they left, we go to Wellesly University. Swahdin was there, no people to listen to him. A Mrs. Nold crossed out all our posters.
We took off for UMass. Devashish not there. Swahdin talks
to 12 people. After the talk we leave and go home. In New York Sunil is waiting for Devashish. No Devashish. They dropped him off bu U Mass – he claims he didn’t know where the talk was, (I DID tell him). Devashish was stuck in Boston. At Harvard the room was taken over by the Campus film group, our contact never called to notify me, he came an hour late to try to get another room – so I was accused by all for the failure of the evening. I felt like crawling under a bed. Well, I must accept this experience and use it for humility.

Nov.14th Guru’s “Veda” Lectures at Wellesly and Harvard. Starting at Welesly. The Chaplain changed our lecture from the Chapel to a lounge. Brief panic, but actually it was justifiable. Guru arrives with Druhva. I open the door for him. He smiles a bit and walks on to the men’s room to change. Then he goes upstairs to the lounge.
I wait for latecomers, then go into the lecture. Small crowd. Many do not look at Guru- not receptive. He speaks into small podium mike that crackles and is blurry. He sits in a chair while he is videotaped. He radiates waves of gentle blue-gold Light, a short meditation, his eyes moving back and forth rapidly. When he finishes and gets up, all rise. Many do not know what has happened and walk out quickly. Guru passes through the door, I hold it open for him. He motions for me to get his shoes, i pick them up, his shoes in my hands. As though I carried their weight in gold, I held those precious shoes, (To this day, I still vividly recall that moment). I followed Guru slowly down the stairs. At the bottom he didn’t know which way to go. “This way Guru”, I said. I lead him uncomfortably. At the driveway we stop. Guru asks me if I had a ride to the next lecture. I said “yes, I could go with Matt” and the UCONN boys. “Goood”, Guru says. Silence. I stand with him, holding his shoes.
Alo comes on the scene. Her car had broken down. She waited for 45 minutes, then finally got it started, got lost then …”terrible directions, very poor map’ Guru says. “Harit drew it!” (Oh boy, I felt guilty, although Michael drew it!) Then Alo turns to me, I don’t think she even said hello, but just started saying the girls were outside and perhaps wanted to come in a bit, she walked to the door. I insisted I’d run out in the rain (of course!) and tell them to come in
When I came in Alo asked if I could drive Ranjana’ car, and they’d go with Druhva. I said I could and would. Guru and all were getting into Druhva’s car. I opened the second passenger door, put Guru’s shoes on the floor and said “Guru, here are your shoes.” “very good”, he replied. I closed the door gently. (For the rest of my life I shall remember that moment. I carried God’s shoes.)

At Harvard it was a big white hall, Quiet. Many people, about 300, sat silently. Alo is in the balcony. Excellent P.A. system.
Guru spoke softly, we all heard him well. He told about the “Seven Sisters and the Seven colours, etc. He went on telling people they should accept life and aspire, and how spiritual Masters give knowledge of the Veda through silent gaze! Then he began a silent meditation filled with Peace, Light, Bliss, Power, blue Light radiating though the entire hall. He never looked at me over on the left-hand side of the stage. I was yearning inwardly for union with him. I sat in awe and was captured by an intense, silent surrender. It gripped me. I sat silently, motionless, and wept within to receive more Light. Letting go of the strings of apprehension allowed me to open a bit more. Patience is so important, not to be over-eager, not to pull at him.
After the meditation many people go up to the stage to sign up for the Boston Meditation Groups. All are moved by the silent meditation.
I held the door open for Guru as he left the hall. He smiled. He didn’t stop or look directly at me, but said happily as he passed me “wonderful, wonderful!”. My heart exploded with happiness.
On the way home our car pulled up at a stop light behind theirs. Alo gives us cold onion rings. We followed Guru and Alo’s car for 15 miles and then passed them and drove back to Connecticut.

Swahdin was a trooper. He was trekin’ out there to testify of his dedication and sincere spiritual beliefs right along with Devashish and the other big-shots from Jamaica queens. As Rudra called themselves: the “inner circle”
